Books Under Contract

  • Why It’s OK to Think This Song is About You. Routledge.
    • We’ve all heard Carly Simon’s lyrics: you’re so vain, you probably think this song is about you. In this book, I argue that sometimes she’s right: this song is about me; I am vain in thinking so; but it is OK to be a little vain in your aesthetic life. In developing this argument, I revive two traditions in aesthetics that have for a while now fallen out of fashion, romanticism and expressionism, and show how they speak to central elements of the everyday conception of the value of artworks.
